The Carnegie opened “Hello, Dolly!” tonight, starring Sara Mackie in the title role. Here are five reasons you should check it out:
This throwback musical is popular with audiences; it seemed to me that many people were in the house for the first time, and I assume it was the title that drew them in as they loudly perused the program, commenting on the cast bios and generally sharing contrasted enthusiasm with a lack of familiarity with the local theatre scene. If you like old-school musicals, this one is for you.
The costumes and set design are gorgeous to look at. Tyler Gabbard is well-known for his scenic design work, and his patterned set is not only functional but also a feast for the eyes throughout the production. John Faas has dressed this talented ensemble to the nines in period-appropriate attire - and again, it’s a visual delight.
Stand-out comedic performances from Matthew Callas, Jack Manion, and Aliya Pimental. Their sense of timing, physicality, and ability to remain grounded in the humor while maintaining the over-the-top aesthetic the show requires is a true highlight. Kudos to director Joe Bertucci and choreographer Elizabeth VandeWater for helping them find all the right beats, especially in the middle of Act One.
The musical numbers are pretty and sound excellent in the hands of music director Steve Goers. The cast is mixed with seasoned professionals and young people - all giving throughout each moment on stage. It’s a good ensemble!
Finally, the last reason to see this show - and the most important - is Dolly herself. I can’t think of a better actress in the area to play this iconic role than the bombastic yet vulnerable Mackie. Sara is one of our best; she’s played in many theatre sandboxes lately and it all built to this starring performance. She commands the stage but also elevates everyone around her.
If you’re a fan of this style or title, then this production at the Carnegie will fulfill everything you’re looking for in a night out on the town: solid work from all involved and a great, intimate space to enjoy it in.
HELLO, DOLLY! runs through February 18th at The Carnegie. Tickets and more can be found here.
