Every time I descend into the tunnels of the ethereal Ghost Baby, a speak-easy-like jazz club hidden on Republic Street in Over-the-Rhine, I feel like I’m going back in time. It’s reminiscent of a time that might not have existed with its decor and vibe. It reminds me of a time when musicians played standards for a room full of people just out for the night without paying a hefty cover or excessive prices.
That time still exists in this popular hangout. (I got out of there for less than $20, had a mocktail, a tall glass of cranberry juice, and a tip.)
The jazz stylings of the Stanislav Przedlacki Quintet enthralled the enthusiastic crowd in the club tonight. With songs like “Moon River,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” “Blue Moon,” and more, this tight band showcases everything that’s right with the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.
Przedlacki, a senior musical theatre student (and French double major), has been performing this type of music for some time - and commented how he doesn’t think there are enough ballads performed these days. His versatile voice shone on songs like “You Must Believe in Spring” and the opening number, “Les Feullies Mortes/Autumn Leaves.”
Previously, he and a harp player would gig at Ghost Baby (and other venues), but she injured her hand, forcing him to regroup. He then assembled this group of musicians, all of whom are Jazz Studies majors at CCM. Their skill is impressive. Saxophonist Colin Palmieri stood out with his solos, riffs, and soulful playing. Jack Mansfield (drums) and Teddy Mechley (bass) kept things squarely in the pocket, while Tristan Krueger’s smooth guitar provided the musical texture.
The next to last number (“Somethin’ Stupid”) was extra special, as Stan was joined by fellow musical theatre student Peyton Kern. Their vocal duet was the first time they’d performed together in public - and it was beautiful. The finale was a soaring version of “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which left the audience craving more.
I’ve been trying to catch this act for some time; I was thrilled that my schedule finally lined up to allow this fantastic opportunity to see a multi-talented, multi-faceted musician do something he loves. Przedlacki is a transcendent gem, a unique throwback to a time gone by who also happens to have a diamond-studded future ahead of him.
