One of my favorite things is attending intimate theatrical experiences, whether fully staged productions or simple cabarets. Earlier today, I happened to see an Instagram story about an event tonight at a coffee shop in Clifton featuring some musical theatre students from CCM. I was free, it was free, and I went (but not before checking with a recent graduate and friend to make sure it wouldn’t be weird. After all, I don’t want people to wonder who that old man sitting in the corner is and why he is crashing the party . . .)
I’m really glad I went.
Hosted at Upside Brew on Ludlow in Clifton, this Queer Cabaret was jam-packed with CCM students (both MTs and Acting Majors) supporting their classmates - and to hear some incredible singing. While I didn’t figure out how to see the program, I will say that Matt Welsh killed it on the piano, while vocal standouts were Ryan Dever, Peyton Kern, and Julia Schick, who directed the cabaret as well. (Julia is the artistic director of Mosaic, a student-led theatre ensemble that seeks to amplify the voices and stories of marginalized groups in order to promote inclusivity and creativity within the UC and Greater Cincinnati community.
As the oldest person in the room - by far - I’m encouraged by not only the talent present on stage but also by the passion and ambition of this generation for equality and inclusion and social justice.
And despite being the old guy in the corner, I felt welcome, too.
I’m so glad I went.

So Glad I Went
