The term “gaslight” has gained prominence in the contemporary lexicon, often symbolizing a manipulative tactic where one makes another question their reality or sanity. Its origin traces back to the classic play “Gaslight” by Patrick Hamilton. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s recent rendition, adapted by Steven Dietz, stays true to this essence, adeptly reminding audiences of the term's origin. The chilling narrative keeps audiences on the edge of their seats throughout its 95-minute duration.
In a collaborative venture with Merrimack Theatre, the stage is graced by new talents: Kristin Yancy as “Bella,” Tom Coiner portraying “Jack,” Karen MacDonald stepping into the shoes of “Elizabeth,” and the versatile Jack Bausch. Alongside them, CSC stalwarts Jim Hopkins (in the role of “Sgt. Rough”) and Candice Handy (as “Nancy”) are joined by local actor, Christian Hall.
At its heart, the plot of "Gaslight" is deceptively simple: Jack endeavors to convince his wife, Bella, of her descent into madness, driven by malevolent intentions. Sgt. Rough’s character meticulously untangles the intricate narrative and underlying psychology, which I won’t delve into here to keep this review spoiler-free. Let’s just say Jack isn’t the archetype of a doting husband.
Every production element adds depth to this gripping tale. Samantha Reno's set design reflects the opulence one would expect from a mansion of that era. Rainy Edwards' costumes are both time-period accurate and strikingly elegant. The play's ambiance heavily relies on Laura Glover's masterful lighting, which tells a story of its own. The audience is further immersed through Robert Carlton Stimmel’s impeccable sound design. Guided by Courtney Sale’s direction, the play captivates with moments so intense that they elicit audible gasps from the audience.
All in all, this production is a testament to the brilliance of one of Cincinnati's finest theatres. From its intimately cozy seating close to the stage to the affable house staff and the aesthetically pleasing lobby and public areas, an evening (or afternoon) spent at "Gaslight" is sure to be memorable.
