Every year, Ensemble Theatre Company produces a family-friendly show in the holiday slot, which is seen by tons of kids and families as an alternative to “A Christmas Carol” and other less kid-friendly fare on stages around town. I appreciate this tradition. But I’m a single man in my late 40s; while I love Fiona the Hippo, “Fiona the Musical” was not written with me in mind.
I doubt anyone really wants a serious theatrical critique of this show. (If you do, I guess you can email me.) But I will tell you what’s good about this world premiere:
Zina Camblin is a talented writer who understands story and beats and tells a compelling narrative using well-defined characters that kids can identify with. There are bullies, heroes, underdogs, protectors, and a redemption arc for those who need it. Fresh off of “Wrecking Ball,” which is more to my taste, I hope she continues to have plays produced locally.
Sara Mackie, having a fantastic year on stage, does it again with her turn as Bibi, Fiona’s mom. She is infinitely watchable every time she steps on stage.
Erin McCamley, “Fiona,” is one of the most underrated performers in Cincinnati, and I’m thrilled that she’s got the title role even if she has less stage time than many others. She has stage presence for days.
It’s always a treat to see Kate Wilford on stage; she’s a heck of a fairy godmother character. Or, in this case, a red oxpecker godmother.
Darnell Pierre Benjamin, credited as a co-choreographer with the wonderful DeeAnn Bryll, might be at his best here playing a diva giraffe whose fashion sense rivals his dance moves.
It’s always great to see Cincinnati spotlighted positively; the references to UC, the Bengals, Grippos, Skyline, and more are always crowd-pleasing.
My friend Anne says the Fiona cookies served by the bar were quite good, and she enjoyed her popcorn (there are three flavors available - she had butter & salt).
All in all, this does seem like it will be a hit with families, especially those with younger children - though it might be a little long. The ambition of a production of this quality (with the usual tech, design, and other elements that make ETC so great) is notable.
Now I’m gonna watch some videos of the real Fiona before bed; I’d forgotten how much I fell in love with that spunky little hippo.
FIONA THE MUSICAL runs through December 29th at Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. Click here for more information.
