FRINGE: Runaway Princess is Gripping
Mary Goggin's true-life story about a life of addiction is awe-inspiring
Trauma stories make for good theatre, as evidenced by Mary Goggin's memoir on stage called “Runaway Princess.” It’s gripping; I cried more than once. The origin of her shame is rooted in relatable experiences with our parents; Goggin is a case study in the snowball effect of bad choices. The culmination of peer pressure, needing to survive, and brain chemistry all led her to a very dark, sad path.
However, like all great trauma stories, hers is ultimately one of redemption and hope. She doesn’t leave the audience feeling sad. Instead, she makes sure to tell us how well she’s doing - but the road that we travel with her is bumpy, to say the least. Be forewarned; this, like “Made in America” could be significantly triggering for some.
The thing I loved most about this production is the way the actress morphs in and out of various characters and accents. She uses a fable as a device to intrigue, but her unique charisma is mesmerizing right from the start. This is a show that can empower and heal.
