FRINGE: "Julie" is Not To Be Missed
Lisa DeRoberts and company start Fringe off in the best possible way
I’ve long thought that Lisa DeRoberts is perhaps the best comedic actress in Cincinnati. Her expressive face, her perfect sense of timing, and her overall self-awareness make her infinitely watchable on stage. So, in her playwriting debut - “Julie” - she has given herself the perfect vessel to showcase all of her strengths.
Expertly directed by Lauren Carr, this production features more tech and costumes than you might expect to see in some of the venues. All of it is executed precisely, with a professional-level production that earns the label of “Not To Be Missed.”
The ensemble hits all of its beats. Abi Esemena, Dan Robertson, Andrew Maloney, R DeAndrè Smith, and Hannah Levin play multiple characters to tell the fascinating story of Julie d’Aubigny. There’s fight choreography from Mike Agee and John Baca while Torie Wiggins coordinated the more intimate moments on stage.
It’s bawdy, it’s shocking, and it also has a point. But mostly, it’s hilarious - and demonstrates exactly what is great about Fringe: artists creating their own work to show what they are capable of - if only given the opportunity.
